Graham Hall is twenty-six and has a dream job as a travel writer. He’s come to Colorado for work and a little personal down time. With his article done and the six-month lease up on the small cabin in the valley, he’s stayed around until his next assignment. In a downtown Denver bar, Graham meets Edward and after a short conversation agrees to a blind date with Edward’s business partner, Jane. Afterall, what could it hurt?
Jane is completely oblivious to the machinations of Edward and Graham and shows up at Graham’s cabin to deliver a box of handmade chocolate truffles. From the minute he opens the door, she falls head over heels in lust. A plus size, mid-thirties woman, Jane isn’t sure what Cowboy Surfer, as she’s dubbed him, sees in her or why he’s so tenacious in his pursuit and tries throwing him off at every turn.
The inability to say continue saying ‘No’ leads to hot, scorching sex and a lot of follow-up phone calls opening Jane’s eyes to the realization that maybe life doesn’t have to revolve around chocolate truffles, but rather around a delicious well traveled younger man.
I can remember a time when my father used to shout out the car window to a group of teenage boys, “Wanna date my daughter?” I was in a green minivan wearing one my unfortunate Eddie Bauer sweater vests and horribly uncomfortable training bra. Not cool. Humiliated, I would slump down my seat wishing my father would not try and set up me via drive-by-dating. I still break out in a cold sweat when my father rolls down his car window and I see the mischievous twinkle in his eye, which brings me to Sugar Rush and meddling gay business partners who like to play matchmaker.
Jane is set up to meet a client under stern instructions to be dressed in a frilly pink snow-bunny suit and obscenely tall high-heels. As she makes her way across the treacherous ice to hand deliver truffle chocolates, Graham, the sexy looking cowboy surfer, is confused. He didn’t order any chocolates. Jane is further humiliated to find out there are no chocolates in the box and this has been a set-up by her altruistic gay friend to ‘get her out there’ in the dating field. Like any other red-blooded woman, she adopts the strategy of fleeing the scene so as to escape any further gauntlets of humiliation.
From this point on the story arcs with Graham trying to date Jane who has been burned by her last relationship and wants nothing to do with a younger man. Unable to resist his intelligence and charm she ends up having hot sexy-time (on top of chair!), only to learn later on that Edward, her business partner, had offered Graham money to take her out. Feeling betrayed Jane tries to shut Graham out of life without waiting to hear his side of the story.
I had one teeny hiccup, I would have liked more expansion on the part where Jane overhears that Edward offered to pay Graham to go on one date with her. It seemed a bit rushed where Jane was upset (rightfully so) and before Graham told his side, it seemed the problem was resolved. I also had a little bit of a problem connecting with Jane, as even if I had been burned, who could possibly turn down a well muscled, cowboy surfer? That’s like saying no to chocolate! It’s just not done! My niggles were when she often complained about her body, instead of endearing me to her, it came off as defensive versus vulnerable or self deprecating. Graham had to continually keep telling her she was pretty and that he liked her curves. Although this didn’t deter my reading enjoyment, at times I was a bit put off by her behavior. Aside from this, I felt Sugar Rush was a well written, concise story that was enjoyable and fun!
Overall I really enjoyed Sugar Rush. I liked the aspect of a younger, intelligent man falling in love with a older woman who has trouble seeing her own value. (Pssst) There is a really sexy scene when Jane accidently catches her partner Edward having sex with the downstairs neighbor Eric. She has a total peeping tom moment and it was titillatingly erotic! And yes I was ubber excited to get a mini (light) m/m scene.

I just read Simple Need by Lissa Matthews and really enjoyed it. Very sexy books!
Thank you…
@Mandi This author knows how to write sexy scenes!!! A few times I had to do this ::fans self::
@ Lissa, KC and I really enjoyed your book!! I just had to make a little pit stop at See’s Candy’s as Jane and Edward inspired me to indulge.
@K I really want that chocolate candy that Jane made at the end. Made my mouth water.
So far, I’ve only read some Saterday Snippets on this author’s blog, but they were really good and sexy! I think I would like this book, althoug I don’t care for heroines complaining about their looks, like you. But since that didn’t take away from your enjoyment of the book, this sounds like a fun read. Wonderful review!
sorry for the typo’s
@Janna it was just a small inconsequential aspect that maybe was a me thing. Perhaps other readers won’t even notice. I really connected with Graham and overall Sugar Rush was a really well written book.
P.S. I’m the queen of typos.
I got that from your review
I will probably notice too, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to read this book. The candy treats alone sound good to me, lol. And I like her writing style.
P.S. No you’re not, I am
I even made a typo in typos, lol!
@Janna (EroticRomReader) Honestly I would die without Firefox’s little spell check squiggle line.
Of embarrassment, you mean
Sounds handy! I could use that too, lol! Or even better a little translator thing or something
@Janna No I think I would really die, of course I’m being overly dramatic (as usual). I know Google has a translator although I’m not sure how good it is.
Lol! Probably like most automatic translators, it’s too literal
It comes up with this weird crooked sentences that even I can do better, lol!
I haven’t read Lissa Matthews yet. Seems like this one had some ups and downs for you. Still sounds like an enjoyable read. I like the younger man, older woman angle…not that I’m a cougar or anything. *g* Very nice review!
@Fiction Vixen I only had wittle problem with Jane’s attitude but overall I really liked Sugar Rush. Oh please you are so a cougar, I see you drooling over Edward in Twilight. Oh wait..that’s me. My bad.
Okay.. you blog name is soo matching your review and this book honey!!
Awesome review!! Hope all is well!
@Cecile all is definitely well when I have book like these (points above) to read and when I visit your blog for the man candy. Have to get my daily dose somewhere.
I think the character sounds too much like me (expect for the being hurt by a younger guy that is) for me to enjoy it properly.
@Colette I really liked that Jane wasn’t a stick thin model with C-boobies. Although I didn’t always connect with her throughout the entire book, I liked that a younger, sexier, guy could show her how to love herself.
I was giggling at the Eddie Bauer sweater vest reference..I never had one of those (hides face in shame). My dad was the opposite of yours..he used to sit in his chair with his rifle next to him when I brought guys home in highschool..freaked a few of them out
@Heather I also had these bright colored Eddie Bauer shorts that went down to my knees. I was so not feminine. I pity your high school boyfriends, lol. Although my father thought it was hilarious to yell out the car window, my sisters and I were not allowed to date until we were 16. Hell on my dating life.
Oh, I would have killed my dad if he had done that to me! lol
Good review. I kind of like the angle of this one.
@Melissa (Books and Things) you had to have tough skin to survive in my household.
OMG! What a horrid childhood experience!! LOL! Something like that could leave lasting damage. *wink*
SUGAR RUSH, while it sounds pretty cute, probably won’t be on my wish list. For one, its an ebook and the whole idea of starting ebook reading scares the hell out of me. My TBR is big enough already and the thought of having that same amount of unread digital books gives me nightmares. And lastly, there’s m/m romance going on and its just not my cuppa.
Hugs, VFG
@VFG I hit the deck when my father’s window rolls down.
I believe it might eventually go to print, but don’t quote me on that. Oh nos why do ebooks scare you? Is it the instant gratification of downloading…?
The m/m scene was super light and really had more to do with Jane just being a peeping tom, so if you are not comfortable or like that aspect it is not explicit
This does sound cute -I have read Ms. Matthews work before she has a fun style..

KC, you make me laugh! who could possibly turn down a well muscled, cowboy surfer? That’s like saying no to chocolate! So agree with you, because I know I couldn’t.
Your dad sounds like a hoot! You probably weren’t thinking that back then.
