When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid’s life is far less exotic. Her boss is a middle-management demon with a thing for John Cusack movies. Her immortal best friends haven’t stopped teasing her about the time she shape-shifted into the Demon Goddess getup complete with whip and wings. And she can’t have a decent date without sucking away part of the guy’s life. At least there’s her day job at a local bookstore–free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can’t.

Richelle Mead is one of those author’s that has been on my radar for quite some time but it took fellow blogger Book Addict Patti high recommendation and giveaway to turn me on to the series.  So after an awkward slide tackle with my mail man – what, like you all don’t do the same thing. (Now that I think about it my UPS guy always gets this look of intense fear when I approach his PSB -personal space bubble, after he practically threw my package at me and sashayed off my front lawn ). I  was ready to delve into Mead’s world of the Succubus Georgina Kincaid.

Succubus Blues is one of these series that I knew I’d become so attached to I’d need to make a Costco run for some Kleenex and keep my partner in crime on speed dial to get me over Georgina’s relationship bumps. Mead has a way of really humanizing Georgina and you really feel for her predicament as an unfortunate succubus. Now, we all know that I was adamant about no more UF series without a written guarantee of a happily ever after, but here I go again, I just can’t help myself.  Mead already has me addicted and I’ll be as much of a wreck as I was reading Karen Marie Moning and the Kate Daniels series. I know I should ‘detach with love’ but I can’t seem to help myself with this interesting series.

Georgina is a succubus who works in a local bookstore and has a major author crush on writer Seth Mortensen. (Coughs) as a person who also stalks admires many an author’s work, I felt an immediate kinship. My favorite scene has to be when Georgie corners a fellow book reader in the travel section, – not knowing that as she is pontificating about her love for the author and said  customer is actually THE SETH MORTESEN. Total Oh Em Gee moment. As a person who constantly puts her foot in her mouth ( I once said ‘my it’s nipply out to my ubber Christian cousins *face palm* ), I couldn’t help but snort-laugh when she said:

I-well yes, of course I do. It’s just that…okay. Look, don’t get me wrong. I worship the ground this guy walks on, I’m excited to meet him tonight. I’m dying to meet him tonight. If he wanted to carry me off and make me his love slave, I’d do it, so long as I got advanced copies of his books.

I felt my stomach sink out of me adn hit the floor with a thud as I put two and two together. No. No. It couldn’t be –

“Ah, Georgina. I see you’ve already met Seth Mortensen”

“Kill me, just kill me now.” (Georige)

This is where I fell in love. Despite Georgie’s succubus lifestyle, she still just a girl, with the same wants and desires as the rest of us, who charmingly crushes on her favorite author’s books (she stops herself at only reading a few pages a night, so she can savior his writing for as long as possible). God, couldn’t you just die?!  I love this about her!

Add the mystery of someone killing immortals in her area, one hot linguistics bad boy Roman and a introverted writer who you can’t help but root for, and you’ve got a series that will keep you up until 4:00 in the morning just to see if Seth ever really does sign her copy of his book. My only hesitation about reading the rest of the series is that Georgie and Seth experience some major heartache and  selfishly I don’t know if I’m strong enough to survive their relationship hiccups. This series makes me feel so much, I’m already half in love with Seth and have a woman’s crush on Georgie. I know I won’t be able to stop myself from consuming the rest of the books in this series, Mead is just too good of an author to turn down. What I can’t promise isno  late night phone calls to my partner in crime, a tweet or two to fellow online encouragers, downing a bottle of red wine (maybe boxed?)  to ‘make it through’ the rough patches, and a whole roll of toilet paper because I am too cheap to buy Kleenex.

  1. I’m in love with Seth too..why can’t they just live happily ever after NOW? I don’t care if she can’t have sex with him…I need to read book two but I feel anxious. I know they must have a rocky road ahead of them…

I did love this book though. (I adored that she only read a few pages a night :)

  2. I lurve Seth and I totally adore this series. I love the last book and I so want the next one. It’s a total addiction. I should have read only for pages a day. *sigh*

  3. So glad you liked it!! This is one of my favorite series. People see the title and automatically assume it’s all about the sex but in actually it’s a great story and not about the sex in the way that you would think. DEFINITELY keep going!!!

  4. I started this book last year but I never finished it. I liked Georgie but I only read like the first few chapters. I was in love with Ms. Meads other adult UF Storm Born and I started Succubus Blues right after. I think I was looking for the same thing but this is a totally different type of book. I think I’ll pick it up again it sounds good.

  5. I’ve been hearing such great things about this series, and I really want to read it now. Great review, btw.

  6. I have been putting off this series for the same reason, I already know there will be heartache, I’m just not sure I am ready for it. But I do LOVE Richelle Mead, so it’s been hard to resist!

  7. I’m in love with Georgie and all her buddies! Yes, there is some emotional turmoil but it’s worth it. I felt like books 3 and 4 ripped my heart out and stomped on it but Succubus Shadows was GREAT! I finished it without wanting to cry or throw things LOL Yes, I know I get WAY too invested in the life of fictional characters ;)

  8. Great review. I haven’t started this series yet as I’m not sure I can handle anymore “relationship problems”. A few of my fictional crushes are experiencing these and frankly, I’m going to need therapy soon.

  9. @Mandi maybe if you hold my hand, together we can read book 2. Kindle Vixen mentioned there was quite a bit of angst in books 2-5, I don’t know if my heart can take it.

@Susi have you read most of Mead’s Succubus books?

@KayAnna Kirby sometimes it depends on our moods, I’ve done that before. I’m actually experience it now with Ann Aguirre’s Hell Fire, just can’t make myself finish it. Probably a me thing and I need to start over again.

Mead writes another series, one with vampires right?

@Stacy I think you’d really like this one, Mead does an awesome job of pulling you in with her characterization.

@Kindlelicious Phew, glad I’m not the only one. Someone needs to peer pressure us to finish this series…somebody like Kindle Vixen!

@Christie ::puts on scared face:: no, I’m not scared to get my heart ripped out of my chest. Not at all. Gah, I get so involved in my books that I experience what the characters are experiencing – I believe my younger sister (the budding therapist) refers to this as my ‘enmeshment issues’.

@Tori we’ll go halfsies with the therapy bills, m’kay?

  10. Thank the gawds that I have this book! Like you, KC, I’ve had Richelle Mead on my radar for a while and after reading your review, it reminded me why. I’m thinkin’ that my copy needs to make its way to the top five in my queue…

Thanks for the great review, girl!

    Hugs, VFG

  11. Can’t tell you to man up since I haven’t read this series yet either. Sounds good tho. Oh, and if the UPS man sashayed… he just wants to show off his butt. Hopefully it is a nice butt to look at for ya! ;)

  12. @VFG maybe we can stock up on Kleenex for books 3-5, I’ll need an online shoulder to cry on.

@Melissa Doesn’t matter ;) tell me to man up anyways! I need to feel peer pressured!

  13. First I want to tell you that I love your reviewing style, your personal little remarks on the side are making me LOL all the time :)
Then, this series sounds good, but I’m only ready to read the books when someone assures me that A) the last book is out and is definitely the last book of the series and B) there’s absolutely no doubt about the HEA – I really need one, unless the smexing is beyond awesome! So I’m waiting for your verdict :)

  14. @Janna *hugs* thanks, I”m having such a lousy day I spilled coffee all over my white blouse before a meeting and hat to give a presentation with coffee stains on my boobies.

Kindle Vixen who has read all 5 books assured me there is angst but that I need to read this series. I’ll take one for the team and read the rest…with a box of tissues nearby.

  15. I have this book from the library! I can’t wait to read it. The series sounds like a great one. :) Loved your review.

  16. ROFL! I’m sorry, I shouldn’t laugh, but you’re too funny :) Didn’t your momma teach you never to eat or drink when wearing white? ;)

Is book 5 the definite last book, or will there be more? Or don’t you know?

  17. @Colette I’m afraid this series has be addicted like Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series.

@Janna OMG, pop quiz, I think there will be more books since this is an ongoing series.

I had a straw and everything, the lid had coffee in it, I was so embarrassed. I went across the street and yeah, now am wearing neon stripped shirt. I just can’t win today Janna.

  18. I read this one and book #2 and loved them but am scared of the more emotional stuff of book 3-4 so I haven’t started them yet.. I’m emotional book wimp.. I want my HEA now dammit.. and with Seth too!

  19. @Heather is book 2 a heart stomper? Will I need to take some zoloft?

  20. Oh I really liked this book!! Seth is a sweetie pie and I loved how they met. So funny!! I really need to read book 2 soon.

  21. @Fiction Vixen Yeah, I think I’m going to do it. I’m gonna read book 2 this weekend, while hubs is at a guy baseball fest I’ll be crying in my blankie sobbing.

  22. there were some heart stomping parts in book 2.. Mead writes such good characters I don’t want to see them get hurt..it gives me the snifflies..

  23. @Heather I’m such an emotional wimp.

  24. Thanks to one of my bff’s I will be getting series soon… If she does not beat me over the heat with the books first (which she lives a couple states away… so she can’t ha ~ but she would if she could)… Anyway… I will be getting it!!!!
Thanks for piquing my interest again….. **looks over shoulder to see where bff is… is she stalking me…**

  25. @Cecile ::now looks over own shoulder:: great, now you have me going ;)

  26. Sounds like you really enjoyed this one, I don’t see how you have the self-control to not buy the next book. I say this because I would’ve been on Amazon or who ever could get the next book to me the fastest. Yeah, no will power here. *hangs head in shame*

I’ve had Succubus Blues in my TBR for a couple of months now, definitely moving this one up on my list.

  27. @Donna I’m a wimp. I’ve heard books 2-4 tug on your heart and I’m ascared. Usually I’d be clicking buy the rest of the series like there is no tomorrow, alas I need help from the peer pressure department to move forward.
