Dear Josh Lanyon

There comes a time in every reader’s journey that they find an author that delivers touching, distinguished work that is not only relevant but is also both heart-rending and powerful. I cannot take any credit for discovering you on my own, as had it not been for Mandi aka Smexybooks, I would have remained horribly oblivious to your remarkable work. And that would have been a crying shame.

Josh Lanyon you are a cut above the rest. You are an inspiring author in the realm of Gay fiction, and it is your ability to create such wonderful prose, characters and dialogue that has so personally touched me. I fell in love with your Adrien English series, and most especially with Adrien (That’s Adrien with an e mind you). Adrien is charmingly low maintenance with the curiosity of a cat and a depth of character that makes your heart ache.  l vividly recall when Adrien is so worried about his closeted, (semi) boyfriend Jake, that he risks a visitation to the hospital in order to see if Jake is ok after being wounded in the line of duty. Nearly in tears at almost losing him, Adrien walks by his room, spares Jake a quick glance and walks on to the drinking fountain, takes a sip of water and leaves.  It is one of the most riveting and bittersweet points in the series.  And this is the beauty with your work. Your  characters are so achingly human but so real in their emotions that you can’t help but want to meet these people as if they truly existed.

What I am most grateful for is ‘coming out’ of my own reading closet, where romance doesn’t always have to be about one man and one woman. So I guess, I just wanted to say thanks. Thanks for the laughs, the lump-in-throat moments and the characters that live on in our own thoughts and dreams. This from the fans who savor each and every book you write.

(Jake to Adrien)

“I’ve never been that afraid. Not even close. I worked over you, and I called you every

name in the book.” His face twisted. “I cried. And then I begged. You’re damn right I begged. I

promised—not that I had anything worth promising—but I was willing to give anything for you

to be able to walk away from that.” His smile was the rare one, the wide and unguarded one.

“And you did.”

xoxoxo

  10. That was perfect. Absolutely perfect.

  11. Great letter KC. I agree, Josh is an author of incredible talent who just draws you into his stories.

To the Josh Virgins (as Cecile so aptly put it): If you go to the GLBT Bookshelf Freebie page you can pick up a free Josh Lanyon short (and some other great stories) which will of course send you scurring to buy his other books. :-) But it’s a great taste for those who have yet to try his books.

  12. Lovely letter!

And, um, what Kris said. If you look like that, I’m skeered of you. ;)

  13. Love the letter!!! Awesome job.

Great letter KC. Josh is certainly a talented writer and I’ve enjoyed his work.

For all the Josh Virgins (as Cecile so aptly put it): The LGBT bookshelf is offering some free books and one is a short story by Josh so you can give his work a try (and then promptly run out and buys some others). http://bookworld.editme.com/Free-Gay-Ebooks

  15. Lovely letter. So glad you have come out of the closet ;)

Lovely letter KC. Josh is a very talented author.

  21. Kassa

Great letter! I think most everyone I know loves the AE series. Your descriptions are spot on and the reasons why the series is not only beloved but really cherished. I can remember several moments when tears whell but don’t fall (some of the best times!). The bittersweet nature of the characters makes you simultaneously root for them and grumble at them.

There are precious few series that stand out as a complete series – from book 1 to 5 – and very deserving letter.

Ps. I love the fan pic. I think others are just worried that it’s of them… :D

  22. @Tam Oh nos! Let me find your original comment, it may have gotten spammed.

@Kassa LOL I think at one time or another we’ve all looked like that crazy fan…right…guys…don’t leave me hangin’

  23. I am so glad you made the jump into the world of m/m books – I know you have embraced it full on. ..
I really love the letter and I wish you lots of more happy Fanyon moments..

  24. @Erotic Horizon Fanyon = awesomsauce you witty minx you.

  25. Fabulous letter! I thoroughly enjoyed Mexican Heat and Lanyon’s other books in my TBR list.

  26. Oops, that should have said “Lanyon’s other books are in my TBR list.”

  27. @Eyre I vividly remember the ‘desk scene’ in Mexican Heat –> hoses down self.

  28. I’m with you, girls! I’m a fan of JL’s writing too. Even wanted to write my letter to him as well, but I knew already that you would pick him before me ;)
    Wonderful letter!!

  29. @Janna (EroticRomReader) I heart JL that woman can do no wrong in my eyes (well reading wise), My Fair Captain is wonderful.

  30. HUH? I thought we were talking about JL as in Josh Lanyon, lol!
I agree though that JL Langley rocks too ;)
Busy day at the office, hon? :)

  31. @Janna ::Sigh:: I need more coffee I thought you meant JL as in JL Langley

  32. LOL! The mentioning of ‘him’ (twice) in my comment didn’t sink in then? ;)

  33. @Janna I had a total blond moment boo-boo, which is classic KC on Mondays. I even knew you were commenting about Lanyon..yet the brain translated it as JL Langley. Maybe this is early sign of dementia…?

  34. Ohnoes, I hope not, hon! I think it’s just the other fangirl in you, that wanted you to write a second letter to JL Langley, peaking through :)

  35. Wonderful letter, KC!!

I’ve enjoyed reading his books! Great choice.

  36. @Lily *puffs chest out proudly* thanks!

@Janna you are right, my JL Langly fan girl wants to come out and play today.

  37. KC – that was the most amazing letter. I discovered and devoured the AE series earlier this year and the scene and the quote – tore at the heart strings. Josh Lanyon had me so invested in the characters I didn’t want to be anywhere else.

    Your Adoring (Non-Creepy) Fans

    LOL!

  38. Awww.. that letter made me all sniffly..loved the excerpts.. not off to get some kleenex ;)

  39. Dear K.C.,

Thank you for that lovely and most charming letter. It’s one of the nicest letters from a reader I’ve received, and it is very much appreciated.

Although it’s true that writers write first and foremost to please themselves, we publish for *you.* For you and all the other readers who connect in some way to our work. And knowing how busy you are, how little time you have to yourself, it means a lot that you would take the trouble to write and share your feelings on my stories.

Thank you very sincerely for that.

    Best regards,
    Josh Lanyon

PS – Thanks also to the lovely Cait Miller for pointing this letter out to me.

  40. @orannia Gah, I still remember the last line Jake says to Adrien, excuse me while I dab my eye.

    @Heather *passes hankie*

@Josh Lanyon hang on a sec okay *runs into the other room screaming* – ok got the fan squee out of my system.

    Two words: You Rock!

    Thanks for stopping by ;)

PS Thanks Cait Miller *air kisses*

@Ferishia You bring out the rawk in me *pounds fist to chest & throws up the rock sign*

  44. K.C.:

What a sincere, moving fan letter. You truly made me want to read Mr. Lanyon’s work all the more. (I’ve purchased a number of his books and have them on my e-reader.)

    Thanks for sharing K.C.

    Excellent, excellent letter.

  45. That was just lovely, KC. And you said everything that I would have said about the AE books. Marvellous.

  46. *Jumps up and down for K.C.!! Love that your fan letter got read by the right person! Woo!

  47. @Melissa ::jumps up and down:: Woo and Hoo!

@Jenre all this talk about AE makes me want to read ‘em all over again!

@Lea if I can move one book I love up on your TBR pile that makes me happy ;)

  48. What KC/K-Kahn said.

The AE series will always be tops in my book. 2 other favorites are the stand alone, Lovers and Other Strangers, and the I Spy series. Isn’t a long backlist a wonderful thing?

    You ladies rock! :-)

  49. @Renee why thank you.

  50. I’m so with you on the lump in the throat moments. One of very few authors who can actually make me teary when reading. Awesome cool letter KC. :D

  51. You convinced me to read my very first JL book (“Somebody killed his editor”) and now, you’re going to convince me to read the Adrien English series. Which, y’know, I’m totally ok with, but still.

Beautiful fan letter! I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a fan letter as well & jumping on the bandwagon… but I’m not sure I could write a letter as beautiful as that.
