requested review from Netgalley because I can’t resist a book by this author
Mr. Lanyon is bringing his sexy back. I admit to being a huge fangirl of this author’s books, so one could say I’m a wee bit biased. Fair Game starts off with ex FBI agent Elliot Mills recovering from a severe bullet wound in his leg. No longer able to work in the field, these days Elliot teaches young college students history. Elliot is approached by a family friend to discretely investigate a missing college kid where his investigation collides with ex boyfriend FBI agent Tucker Lance who he hasn’t seen since his injury. Forced to work together again, Elliot’s sniffing around is causing someone to take notice in a deadly way…
I’m very particular with books where the main characters have a ‘past history’. This can be tricky as it may add a somewhat contrived sense of angst or drama that makes me think of a bad Sally Jesse Raphel episode. Fair Game gets it right. The intensity between Elliot and Tucker just sizzles off the page, which is shown via flashbacks of when they were initially together. This really showcases the talent of the author and his ability to give the reader just enough of a back story to entice us into wanting to know why it didn’t work in the first place.
The first part of the book centers mainly on Elliot and his recovery as well as the mystery surrounding the missing college student. Meanwhile it’s not until we are quite a bit into the story that Tucker and Elliot’s begin to interact with each other. Again, Lanyon is so crafty that I didn’t feel jip(ed) at not having enough Tucker-Elliot screen-time. Set against the story against the backdrop of the Puget sound, and you have a Michael Scott win-win-win.
If I had to pick one wittle itty, bitty, tenny-tiny, little hmmm it would be Tucker’s reasons for not being supportive and not ‘manning-up’ to stay with Elliot during his injury. Perhaps I am too emotionally invested with Team Elliot, but I would have liked Tucker to have groveled a bit more. I’m just sayin’ a little humiliation, some knee walking, and lots of redeemable intimate coupons really say “Im sorry I was an F-head.”.
Fair Game’s mystery plots reminds me of Don’t Look Back, Ghost Who Wore Yellow Socks, and Somebody Killed My Editor. Although I liked Lanyon’s previous release Vintage Affair, I was left feeling a little, “oh, that’s it?” in regards to the endings. Fair Game is one that hit all my manlove buttons.
Don’t miss this newest release from Josh Lanyon because I said so!

I liked this one..I wanted a little more together time for the heroes, but overall I enjoyed it!
@Mandi Was it just me or did you think Fair Game had some of the sexiest scenes between Tucker and Elliot? I had to turn on my ceiling fan half way through the book. Damn hormones
Sounds wonderful. I really should start reading his books. I really don’t know what’s holding me back. Great review.
KC – I agree, I thought Tucker needed to grovel a bit more before being forgiven!
@Susi you must!
@Chris Tucker crapped on Elliot’s heart therefore he needs to grovel!
‘some knee walking, and lots of redeemable intimate coupons really say “I’m sorry I was an F-head.”.’
LOL Great review, K.C. Made me smile–even before I had my coffee. I’ve loved the 3 Lanyon books I’ve read so far. Looks like I’ll have to pick this one up, too.
@Amber I loved the setting in Fair Game, having it take place in rainy Seattle/Puget Sound area made it even more creepy/suspenseful.
Don’t ya get all tingly inside when an author can hit all your m/m love buttons
I so enjoyed reading your review KC, I still need to discover the story where JL will hit all my buttons but the road to discovery is an interesting one *grin*
