Ok, maybe it’s my blond hair and preggie hormones but I didn’t clue in All That She Wrote was sequel to the most awesome(st) Josh Lanyon book evah–> Somebody Killed His Editor. Hand to god, I thought it was another series. If not for Jessewave’s early review I probably would have waited maybe 48 hours to buy this one and that would have been bad, very bad.

All She Wrote starts off with Christopher (don’t’ call me Chris) and JX 3 months after Somebody Killed His Editor. Christopher is still witty, dramatic and horribly bad at relationships. The beginning starts off with JX accepting that Christopher has a case of major cold feet and decides to tentatively break it off with him. Ok, I’m not going to lie; I got chest pains thinking is this going to be like the Adrien English series? Are they never going to get together until book 5 (KC sobs uncontrollably)?! Anyway, not to worry peoples it’ll all work out in the end.

Christopher (who doesn’t travel well FYI) answer’s his mentor, Anna’s summons after she is recuperating from an accident. Only to find out that she doesn’t just want moral support but wants Christopher to help solve the mystery of whom is trying to kill her. Will murder mystery, a broken collar bone bring JX and Christopher back together again…

Christopher is hands down one of my favorite Josh Lanyon character’s aside from Adrien (with an e) English. He’s witty, dramatic, and self deprecating.

“Age really is a state of mind.”

I groaned.” Please. Spare me the Quote.com pep talk. “

Although I almost broke out in hives thinking we were not going to get a romance between Kit and JX, never fear JX does come back into the story and that’s all I’m going to tell you (insert evil laugh here). Even though Christopher is his own worse enemy when it comes to relationship you can’t help but fall in love with his sarcastic defensive humor and his vulnerability with his age. I liked how the mystery and romance had equal page time and I hope to God there are more books coming out in this series.

To tide ya’ll over I give you this delicious snippet:

“What?” I realized what and put up a self-conscious hand to straighten my specs.” Hey, I’ve always worn reading glasses. This is not an age thing.”

“I know that. I remember you wore them to your panel at the conference where we first met. You looked very intellectual – and sexy as hell. I like ‘em. They’re cute.”

Cute? My three-hundred-dollar Armani tortoiseshell glasses were cute? They were supposed to make me look erudite and distinguished.

He added with breathtaking honest, “I want to fuck you in those glasses.”

“Uhhhh….” I made a sound generally only heard when police officers ask what you were doing three Friday nights ago at eight o’clock – and can anyone verify your alibi.

All She Wrote is *now* one of my favorite Josh Lanyon books. Mystery check, witty sarcastic dialog check, and sexual tension that practically sizzles off the page check check check. If you’ve read Somebody Killed His Editor YOU CANNOT MISS OUT ON THS ONE,I mean it.

Warning: This book includes bad driving, a naughty German, dirty words, heated glances, mutual masturbation, oral sex, an evil scout, a memorable ride, and a fabulously affordable tuxedo. May cause unexpected bursts of laughter.

They’re baaaaaaaaaack. I thought the warning blurb said it best in capturing what Trust Me If You Dare was all about. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be massively “in hearts (my mother’s term)” with this sequel… usually the first in the series tends to be my fav – I should have known better! Shame on me.

Trust Me if You Dare’s beginning in classic LB Gregg style pulls you right in. It had me chuckling so loud I got glares from Mr. KC. I was also crossing my fingers that baby KC didn’t kick my bladder whilst I was reading; otherwise there probably would have been ‘clean up on the SHB reclining couch.

Caesar is at a used car dealership ‘helping’ his sexy PI boyfriend, Dan, do some investigating. In classic Caesar style he ends up hitting the gas too hard and crashing the lovely BMW he’s test -driving into a parked car. After the embarrassing ‘driving fiasco’ he learns that Poppy (his pregnant BFF and catering business partner) has ‘accepted’ to host a party for his ex (that bastard) Shep. Not only must he work with his ex (again), Shep has a popular German soap actor who can’t seem to help himself by flirting with everything with a y chromosome, including new boyfriend Dan. Working with his ex, fending off a flirting German bad boy, public sexy time in a dark alley and putting off meeting Dan’s parents make or break a relationship…

I laughed, I snorted, and ignored my husband until I finished reading Trust Me If You Dare. What I liked most about it was LB Gregg’s ability to keep me interested in Dan and Ceaar’s relationship. Usually once ‘the boy’s have gotten together I tend to loose interest and want to read about new characters. If it was even possible I fell more ‘in hearts’ with these two characters. TMIYD is another great read from one of my favorite m/m authors and if you’ve read other works by this author you will not be disappointed. SHB pinky swears!

received for review

KC and K-Khan must have done something right this year, cause Santa came a little early, and what did ol’ Saint Nick bring, but an awesome bookie for KC and me. We here at Smokinhotbooks think LB Gregg is the shiznit and when we found out that one of our fav authors had a happy holidays book, it felt as if a Christmas miracle had happened.

So give yourself or a lucky friend the gift of a little Christmas tingle. Nothing says Joy to the World, like boys kissing boys.

Owen McKenzie has traveled to Vermont to spend an old-fashioned Christmas with his family. Little does he know that his meddling, match-making family has invited another guest to their little holiday soirée. Who is this mystery guest? None other than Caleb Black, his first love and first heartbreak. Add a winter storm that traps them in a cabin and you’ll have to read more to find out what happens between Owen and Caleb.

My gaze was drawn back to the pianist as a clump of hair fell across his forehead and he absently shove it back. I should know him. He had trim, light sideburns and long graceful fingers.

He raised his chin, turning to speak with the red-haired woman, and we both froze as his casual glance collided with my curious one.

No. Fucking. Way.

In fifteen years and hundreds– thousands –of miles , those distinctively pale, lichen- green irises could only belong to one man.

Caleb Black.

Mistletoe at Midnight is just what I needed to get my ass in gear for Christmas. Cute love story about second chances and is in a fabulous anthology His for the Holidays.

I did read the other short stories

His for Holidays Anthology

Kindle$7.99

Nine Lights Over Edinburgh By Harper Fox

Great story about a struggling detective whose life is just not turning out the way he wants. As he struggles with his job, borderline addiction problem to alcohol and his daughter’s kidnapping Harper Fox does it again by pulling you in and keeping you on your toes until the end. I liked how James met his romance interest and this was my third favorite out of all the stories.

Rating 4/5

I Heard Him Exclaim By Z.A. Maxfield

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but this was my least favorite. I think it mainly had to do with the love interest- I’m not sure if I was having an off reading night but I never really got into the whole Santa parallel. I loved the main hero and I liked that he had the responsibility of taking care of his niece. All in all I liked this one just not as much as the author’s full length novels I’ve read. Still, this author could write a Wikipedia article on duck migration and I’d still love it.

Rating 3/5

Icecapade By Josh Lanyon

My #1 pick! When I read the blurb I thought, ‘Oh m/m Thomas Crown Affair’. I admit the jewel thief plot line wasn’t screaming out at me but I really liked how Josh Lanyon wrote this one. Most of the prologue is where Noel and FBI agent Robert Cuffe meet when Noel was a jewel thief. After spending one night together the rest of the story takes place 10 years after when Noel has retried and gone straight (legally people). He hasn’t forgotten the sexy agent and can’t help but leave him a message every Christmas. Their paths cross again when FBI agent shows up at his door and accuses him of thieving again.

5/5

Bottom line you need to read His for the Holidays otherwise your Christmas will not be complete!

received copy for a review

Cowboy man love stories make me want to take my faux leather boots and tell Mr. Smokin’ to get on all fours and take me around the living room like a good steed should. Riding crop, is non-negotiable. Here at Smokinhotbooks, there’s nothing more that we love than a studs and spurs love story that involves two beautiful rugged men discovering the joys of raw, how animal (spells out) s-e-x. Chocolate and booze can’t even compare to the joy a cowboy romance brings to this little greenhorn’s eye.

Cowboy Crush is a short read, only around 60+ pages that mostly takes place on the road with two men from the rodeo circuit. Eli has just lost his fiancé, his house, and a little bit of his dignity. His best friend and fellow bull rider, Vinn has always been attracted to Eli, but has never dared to act on his feelings, for fear of ruining a good friendship and Eli’s little problem of liking women instead of men. As Eli drowns his sorrows, he realizes that maybe his no good fiancé might have done him a favor, maybe beneath his feelings of friendship lay something else, something only naughty, bad cowboys would ever think of doing. (Puns and blatant lack of subtly intended- tips invisible fuscia-colored cowgirl hat)

My favorite scene had to be the first kiss between Eli and Vinn:

Throwing caution to the wind, Eli brushed his lips across Vinn’s neck. His friend froze in place for a few seconds before turning to meet his gaze. Those amber eyes turned dark and hooded in an instant, and Eli instinctively knew they were both thinking the same thing.

“You’re my best friend.” His voice was hoarse, Eli tried to swallow past the lump in his throat.

Cowboy Crush is a great teaser that makes me want to read a more lengthier work from this author. Two gay cowboys making whoopie, no need to twist my arm, I’m sold!

book given for review

bald pirate guy + hairy chest + manlove = a happy Smokinhotbooks

When KT Grant asked me to review her debut m/m book, Prince’s Groom I did my best Gollum impression and said GIVES IT TO ME! MY PRECIOUS. It’s been too long since my last KT Grant fix, and with this one being m/m, I was ‘in hearts’ with the story before I even started to read it. Prince’s Groom is the 2nd book in her, (what I fondly refer to as sexy pirate man) series.

The sexy pirate man series began with former prince, Thom, falling deep into to lust with a rakish older pirate, Martin. I can’t help but reminisce about my favorite scene where Martin pushes Thom up against a wall and had his nasty, barbarian way with him. Delish! Unfortunately, things cannot stay forever in sweet carnal bliss and Thom’s real life responsibilities get start to get in the way. So, Thom is forced to return back to his homeland with a leaving Martin and himself a broken-hearted. Both are devastated with this turn of events, however, being that we are dealing with two Y chromosomes here, neither is willing to show their true feelings. Typical male. A year goes by and both have not gotten over one another, Thom wishes to return to his tropical paradise with his hairy pirate, despite starting a friends with benefits relationship with his assistant Will. Just as Martin decides to give up his pirating ways and win Thom back, a dangerous highwayman, and a seriously deranged female stalker might keep them apart….

Hands down people, this is my favorite KT Grant book I’ve read so far. We all know how the girls at SHB are a might obsessed with the pirate genre, *cough. cough Black Wade*, so when I saw that Martin was a bald pirate with a lusty appetite I was in manlove heaven. Usually I feel a little left out when I come into a story and the characters have already met, but I didn’t mind that so much in Prince’s Groom. Anyhoo, my only regret is not being able to see how these characters originally met as it is usually my favorite part of a romance. Sooooo this means I’ll need to buy the first one (wink wink).

Thomas turned to slap Martin across the face, when Martin took hold of his hair and roughly

slanted his mouth against his. Thomas was stunned for a moment, and when Martin slipped his tongue

into his mouth, he pounded his fists over Martin’s shoulders. He tried to keep his mouth shut, but as

Martin dug his fingers into his backside, he gasped. Martin groaned and slipped his tongue inside the

warm cavern of Thomas’s mouth and stumbled back with him in his arms until Thomas hit the wall

behind him.

“Damn you,” Thomas said against Martin’s mouth and wrapped his arms around tighter,

pushing his knee in between Martin’s legs and circling his crotch.

“Thom . . . yes . . . give me this.” Martin panted and without any warning ripped open Thomas’s

coat, vest, and shirt.

“Oh!” Thomas yelped as his buttons went flying. Martin placed his mouth over his nipple and

bit down.

I highly recommend Prince’s Groom for those of you wanting a little break from all the contemporary manlvoe out there and want something that scratches your pirate itch.
